A special message to the world on WORLD MOSQUITO DAY 2022

Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance in general with their annoying buzzing sound in our ears and irritating bites but they are also the vector to many deadly diseases, such as:

  1. Malaria
  2. Dengue
  3. Chikungunya
  4. Zika, etc.

Most of these diseases are preventable but it threatens the lives of millions worldwide.

WORLD MOSQUITO DAY :

WORLD MOSQUITO DAY is Celebrated on 20 August, to honor Sir Ronald Ross. He ascertained the association between mosquitoes and the transmission of malaria in 1897. He discovered that it is the female mosquitoes that spread malaria among humans.

Significance of World Mosquito Day

The purpose of World Mosquito Day is to raise awareness about the causes, precautions and preventions of diseases spread by Mosquitoes.

Main Species of Mosquitoes that act as disease vectors:

  1. Anopheles quadrimaculatus
  2. Culex pipiens
  3. Aedes aegypti
Feeding habits of Female Mosquitoes

Adult females in most species lay their eggs in standing water. The female mosquito needs to have a blood meal to obtain nutrients to produce eggs. Adult male Anopheles feed on nectar.

Life Cycle of Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes undergo four stages in their lifecycles:

  1. Egg
  2. Larva
  3. Pupa
  4. Adult

Different mosquito species prefer different places to lay eggs.

How to prevent mosquito related diseases?

1.Mosquito breeding sites should be detected and eliminated. -Empty stagnant water, cover water containers, frequently refill fresh water in coolers, birdbaths, pet water bowls, etc.

2. Use long-sleeved and protective clothing.

3.Cover strollers and baby carriers with mosquito netting.

4. Use Mosquito Repellents.

5.Stay in well-screened houses

6.Keep Your House Airy and Well-Lit

7. Use mosquito nets while sleeping.

8. Get rid of stagnant water at home.

9.Some species of larvivorous fishes can also be bred in water tanks. It can devour the larvae in water tanks, etc.

SIPC-IPM Techniques For Mosquito control:

We at SIPC use an integrated program to manage and control mosquitoes.

Effective mosquito control program includes:

  1. Proper sanitation (removing food, water, and shelter),
  2. Habitat disruption,
  3. Biological control,
  4. Mechanical control
  5. Self-protection
  6. Chemical control.

Outdoor -Treatment Techniques:

Larval Control:

Bacillus thuringiensis Bactericide chemical Spray is applied periodically to kill mosquito larvae.

Adult Control:

  1. SIPC–Mosquito Wipe out Residual Spray
  2. SIPC Mosquito Repellent Pots
  3. Thermal Fogging

Indoor -Treatment Techniques

Adult Control :

  1. Residual Spray application on walls.
  2. Mist Fogging
  3. Non –Smoke SIPC Mosquito Repellents Pots
  4. Mechanical Traps

Treatment is done in all rooms and also in the breeding sources like drainage openings, channels, water stagnant areas, etc.

Spray and chemicals used are odourless and harmless to human being, safe and most efficient.

No matter what you adapt to prevent mosquito control, its important you keep your surroundings free of stagnant water and thus prevent breeding of mosquitoes and stop the spread of diseases at its origin.
